PRE-EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION

We appreciate your interest in employment with the Metro Special Police Department (MSPD). Our department employs many talented and diverse full-time and part-time employees who protect and serve our clients in the District of Columbia.


To be considered for employment with our department, special police officer candidates must first meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be at least 21 years of age for a Special Police Officer (SPO);

  • Graduated from an accredited high school or institution with a High School Diploma or GED;
  • No convictions of a felony crime (examples: domestic violence, sexual assault, rape, murder, attempted murder, assault on a police officer, or assault with a deadly weapon) and certain misdemeanor crimes;
  • Be free from any physical, emotional, or mental conditions which might adversely affect an individual to perform the duties of a SPO;
  • Be a citizen of the United States. SPOs must be a US citizen at the time of being commissioned, there is no exception for this;
  • Be able to read, write, and speak the English language fluently; 
  • Be of good moral character, as determined by a pre-employment investigation;
  • Be able to pass a comprehensive medical evaluation to include a drug test;
  • Be able to pass a psychological evaluation by a licensed medical provider;
  • Have reliable means of transportation to and from work;
  • ​Experience may be substituted for college credits, prior military service, or prior law enforcement experience, but will be considered on a case-by-case basis and at the discretion of MSPD.

The Department’s pre-employment selection process consists of the following elements:


◾ Submission of a completed employment application;
◾ Initial interview with applicant;
◾ Background investigation to include: 1) employment history verification, 2) personal character reference review, 3) federal criminal history review, 4) state criminal history review, 5) local criminal history review, 6) social media review, 7) motor vehicle history review, 8) education records review, 9) military records (if applicable), and 10) medical records; 
◾ Completion of a medical physical examination by a licensed medical examiner and approved as "fit for duty";
◾ Completion of a 10-panel drug test by a licensed medical laboratory with negative drug results;
◾ Any other requirement determined necessary by the department; and
◾ Final interview and offer of employment.
