PRE-EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION

We appreciate your interest in employment with the Metropolitan Special Police Department (MSPD). Our department employs many talented and diverse full-time and part-time employees who protect and serve our clients in the District of Columbia.


To be considered for employment with our department, candidates must first meet the following minimum requirements:


  • Be at least 21 years of age for a Special Police Officer (SPO);

  • Graduated from an accredited high school or institution with a High School Diploma or GED;
  • No convictions of a felony crime (examples: domestic violence, sexual assault, rape, murder, attempted murder, assault on a police officer, or assault with a deadly weapon) and certain misdemeanor crimes;
  • Be free from any physical, emotional, or mental conditions which might adversely affect an individual to perform the duties of a SPO;
  • Be a citizen of the United States. SPOs must be a US citizen at the time of being commissioned, there is no exception for this;
  • Be able to read, write, and speak the English language fluently; 
  • Be of good moral character, as determined by a pre-employment investigation;
  • Be able to pass a comprehensive medical evaluation to include a drug test;
  • Have reliable means of transportation to and from work;
  • Have a minimum of three (3) years of experience in the position in which you are applying to.
  • ​Experience may be substituted for college credits, prior military service, or prior law enforcement experience, but will be considered on a case-by-case basis and at the discretion of MSPD.

  • Initial interview
  • Personal reference review
  • Criminal record review
  • Driving record review
  • Credit history review
  • Psychological screening
  • Pre-employment physical examination and completion of a health history questionnaire
  • Pre-employment drug test
  • Any other requirement determined necessary by the Department
  • Final interview and offer of employment
